COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longtime resident Allison Andersen found a mysterious tombstone on Sept. 13th near the Taravonia Headframe in Dogtown and began seeking the family of Francis H. Boyd after noting its odd appearance on the anniversary of his passing. A relative confirmed the link, and a local affordable housing agency will work with the family as five new housing units will be built on the property—adding a surprising twist to neighborhood changes.  KXLF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Montana colleges made Forbes' 2026 Top Colleges list—Montana State University ranked #345 while Montana Tech came in at #454. The rankings considered debt, graduation rates and long-term salaries, adding pride to local higher education.  KXTL
  • Montana Tech named geologist John Metesh as director to lead research on extracting rare earth minerals from mine waste — he will guide a national effort and host a three-day summit on Oct. 8th.  KXLF

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montana’s ecosystem is hurting from invasive species such as zebra mussels that clog pipes, saltcedar that pushes out native trees, and feral pigs that damage crops. The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks has put plans in place to slow their spread + is urging locals to report sightings.  KXTL

FINANCE NEWS

  • Montana law prohibits using a credit card to buy Powerball tickets as the jackpot nears $815 million, so players must use cash, checks, or debit cards — the only allowed methods to purchase a ticket. The rule is designed to help prevent players from accumulating debt from high cash advance fees.  KXTL

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Anaconda Trail Society will host the 6 Hours of Disco mountain biking event on October 11th at the Discover Ski Area parking lot where riders will race on the scenic Echo Lake Trail System — participants can ride as individuals or in teams while competing for custom trophies and raffle prizes in any weather.  KXTL
