ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new SpinBlitz report shows Montana ranked second for expensive slow internet—local users need 1.37 hours of work to cover the cost for a median download speed of 111.16 Mbps—which highlights how many Montanans pay too much for poor service.  KXTL
  • Tourism in Montana brought $5B in 2024 and supported 38,240 jobs—down from 48,340 in 2023—while 13.8 million non-residents visited even though spending fell 10%. The $308M collected in taxes helped lower the average local tax bill by about $680.  KXTL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forest Service and DNRC are thinning trees around Basin Creek Reservoir to remove wildfire fuel loading and protect Butte's drinking water supply. • On May 31, a camera installed at Yellowstone captured a bubbling hydrothermal explosion from Black Diamond Pool, which is the second similar event this year. Experts noted that while the event produced only steam and boiling water, they warned that repeated activity may signal increased geothermal unrest potentially affecting nearby regions such as Butte — though a catastrophic eruption remains extremely unlikely.  KXTL
  • Leafy spurge is an invasive plant that threatens native plants and animals since its toxic sap can harm people, livestock and pets—local workers are using biological controls and livestock to slow its spread in Montana.  KXTL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters are seeking clarity after Governor Gianforte vetoed House Bill 547, a plan to fix differences between Butte-Silver Bow's paid and volunteer fire departments. Career firefighters will share ideas with a fire study commission on Monday, June 9 while volunteer firefighters follow on Monday, June 16—both groups hope for local talks to resolve the issues.  MontanaRightNow
  • Butte-Silver Bow County is appealing the cancellation of a $20 million EPA grant that was meant for a community rec center and has billed $75,000 for work done between Jan. 13 and May 2.
