COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Entry forms for the Fourth of July parade—along with nominations for the Grand Marshal—are now open for local community members to join the celebration.  The Montana Standard
  • More than 50 visitors from southern Ireland visited Butte on May 21 to celebrate mining heritage while performing music at the Butte Courthouse—honoring the miners who built the town. The delegation included dignitaries and locals with family ties and toured Southwest Montana to connect with their roots.  KXLF

CULTURE NEWS

  • Butte Trolley Tours resume summer history tours today with daily rides leaving from the Chamber of Commerce at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday—driven by experts who share the city's rich past. A special adult-only ghost tour, Spooks and Spirits - Whispers from the Grave, will run on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 at Headframe Spirits and be led by historian Chris Fisk.  KXTL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Les Cook, the outgoing chancellor at Montana Tech in Butte, will retire June 30 after six years of leadership that expanded academic programs and improved campus facilities—he plans to spend his retirement painting clouds and splitting his time between Michigan and Utah.  The Montana Standard

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montanans saved over 500,000 acres when a late-night amendment added on May 6 that would have bypassed the Federal Land Transaction Facilitation Act was removed on May 21—public pressure from hunters, anglers and conservationists prompted lawmakers to reverse the move.  KXTL
  • Montana Congressmen passed the Big Beautiful Bill on Thursday morning, which ended tax on tips for service workers, lowered Social Security taxes for seniors, and stopped plans to sell public lands. The law also includes border security measures and provisions to keep the Bull Mountains Mine operational—officials say these changes give Montanans more security and money.  KXTL
  • Butte joins a national class action suit seeking compensation for communities whose water may be contaminated by PFAS (forever chemicals) and could use any settlement funds to improve water systems. County officials will test local waterways (Big Hole River and Basin Creek Reservoir) to check for these chemicals.  KXLF

  • Recent data has identified Montana’s top 10 causes of death for 2025 — a review that shows how lifestyle, environment and health care access influence outcomes in our communities.  KXTL
  • Butte-Silver Bow City-County Board of Health launches its third Air Purifier Loan Program to help residents avoid wildfire smoke. The program begins May 28 and gives priority to vulnerable people (aged 65 or with heart or lung issues) while accepting applications until all purifiers are loaned (apply by July 1).  KXLF
