COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Engine No. 25, a historic locomotive near the Civic Center, is under restoration with funds being raised through a summer raffle. Tickets are sold for $10 each for raffle prizes drawn on August 15 — proceeds will support the project.  KXTL
  • Pioneer Street Rods will host its spring car show on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maroon Activity Center on 550 E. Mercury St.  The Montana Standard
  • Whitehall Community Center will hold a Mother's Day event on Saturday, May 9 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Sunday, May 10 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) for local attendees to celebrate the occasion.  The Montana Standard

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Butte Chamber of Commerce launched a Shop Local Challenge (aimed at boosting small businesses) urging residents to shop local daily as rising gas prices and uncertain tourism prompt support for area stores; the chamber also will host Shop Small Saturday downtown on May 9.  KXLF

CULTURE NEWS

  • Butte's Mineral & Gem Club will present a show at the Civic Center on May 16 featuring 40 display cases of Montana minerals, including 12 new exhibitors, four memorial displays and academic exhibits from local miners and prospectors.  The Montana Standard
  • Butte’s Orphan Girl Children’s Theatre will perform Mean Girls Jr. from May 15-17 and May 22-24, giving local youths a chance to shine on stage in a fun, engaging production.  The Montana Standard
  • The Montana Standard is marking its 150-year milestone by inviting readers to share their personal connections starting June 1, with submissions opening as part of the celebration.  The Montana Standard

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Butte voters approved two school district levies on Tuesday; the high school tech levy won 4,168 votes to 2,726 while the elementary general fund was approved by a 4,003 to 2,455 vote margin.  KXLF
