Good morning, Butte. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 2nd of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Butte Mineral & Gem Club will hold its annual show at the Butte Civic Center — scheduled for Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and continuing on Sunday, May 18.  The Montana Standard

CRIME NEWS

  • A Butte man sprayed two troopers with bear spray on Thursday and was sentenced to 20 years in prison— the judge said he and the troopers were lucky to be alive.  The Montana Standard

  • The Rathskeller, a historic underground bar at the Montana Club, reopened today — its hours are 3 p.m. to midnight on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.  The Montana Standard

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents, educators and schoolchildren gathered at a busy intersection to protest news that potential federal cuts may force the local Head Start to close. The program serves 125 children and employs nearly 40 people—its funding will be cut starting in October if Congress does not act.  KXLF

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Birdwatching at Freezeout Lake is changing as low water levels force many birds to find wetter stops while local experts warn that the drought and climate change—already affecting other lakes—are shifting migration patterns and cutting the seasonal boost for local businesses. The shift means birdwatchers may see fewer flocks this spring, and conservation efforts are being considered to help restore the lake's water levels.  KXTL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Opioid overdoses have spiked in Montana while Butte Spirit Home provides supportive housing and recovery programs to help women avoid relapse (Amanda McElhany shared her past overdose experiences). The facility will host a Singo fundraiser (starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 3) at the Butte Elks Lodge to strengthen recovery connections.  KXLF

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
