Good morning, Butte. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.

CULTURE NEWS

  • After a four-year break, the Covellite International Film Festival returns to Butte and will run from April 10 to April 13; the free event will show Montana-made films, live music, standup comedy and theater to celebrate local arts.  KXLF
  • Local research shows that Guinness is the most popular beer sold in Montana despite being brewed over four thousand miles away—this popularity may reflect our strong Irish heritage and longstanding community tastes. Experts note that the loyal following for the historic brew contributes to its top ranking even with many local craft options available.  KXTL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brock Tessman, a former Montana University System executive, has been named the next president of MSU in Bozeman—he will lead a campus facing investigations and critiques over political influence and transparency. If his contract includes a $500K salary like his predecessor's, he will become the state's highest-paid public official.  KXTL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colossal Biosciences has used ancient DNA from Montana’s rich fossil record to resurrect dire wolf pups - Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi - making the state a promising center for de-extinction research. Scientists say further efforts may bring back other extinct species in the future.  KXTL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, news reports say Bert Mooney Airport in Butte has been named one of America's most dangerous airspaces—its mountain terrain and lack of a control tower make landings more challenging. The airport sees only a few commercial flights, keeping the issue largely theoretical for most travelers.  KXTL
  • Butte seniors worry about how they will heat their homes after the federal workforce for energy assistance was fired, leaving the LIHEAP program at risk for delays that could lead to shutoff notices. Experts say the program has enough funding this winter—if proper staff are not in place, processing delays may create dangerous gaps in support.  KXLF

SPORTS NEWS

  • Butte's Tommy Mellott impressed NFL scouts at Montana State's pro day on April 2nd by running a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and leaping 41 inches—showing his versatility as he prepares to build on this performance ahead of the NFL Draft later this month. He hopes his skills open doors for an NFL career in the weeks to come.  KXLF

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
