COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, the annex of the Butte Civic Center filled with people at the sold-out 12th Empty Bowls event that raised about $50,000 for the Butte Emergency Food Bank Backpack Program to help feed schoolchildren on weekends — local artists crafted the bowls and community groups donated soup.  KXLF
  • Butte Cares is accepting nominations for the Moving Mountains Awards — an honor that celebrates everyday heroes who strengthen our community. Nominees include youth coaches, educators, volunteers and local leaders — and those seeking more details can call 406 4989584.  KXTL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, energy leaders Ryan Lance of ConocoPhillips and Richard C. Adkerson of Freeport-McMoRan met with Montana Tech students and explained that world energy consumption grew 50% over 25 years and will keep rising as more people gain access to power. They stressed that Montana Tech graduates are vital to supplying affordable, reliable energy and solving challenges like methane leaks and orphan wells — urging a collaborative approach in the industry.  Montana Tech

  • Butte-Silver Bow is joining a class-action lawsuit over allegedly tainted firefighting gear — county officials said other local government entities may join similar suits soon.  The Montana Standard

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk will be held on April 12th at Montana Tech—check-in is at 10am and the walk begins at noon. The free event will raise awareness and build support for mental health in our community.  KXTL
  • The FDA and FTC launched an investigation into dangerous counterfeit snacks sold in Montana stores after tests found fake chips, candies, and cookies with undeclared allergens and unsafe chemicals (including substances used in marijuana products). Consumers are urged to check their treats as these items have been found at local convenience stores and gas stations.  KXTL

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • This spring, residents in Butte can hunt for morel mushrooms on public lands+including areas that recently burned as the fungi start appearing when the soil warms to about 50°F. Foragers must get a permit from the USFS+follow collection limits to help protect the wild mushrooms.  KXTL
